A $8.7 million investment will accommodate growing demand for fine chemicals used in COVID-19 applications and beyond
GEEL, Belgium – February 3, 2020 – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the completion of an $8.7 million expansion of its site in Geel, Belgium. The expansion will enable Thermo Fisher to meet increasing global demand for a broad range of chemicals, solvents and reagents vital to COVID-19 efforts and virtually every laboratory application, from research to drug discovery and development through to large-scale manufacturing.
The facility’s capabilities include global sourcing, repacking chemicals in quantities from 1 mg to 1,000 kg, quality control and global shipping, all of which enable Thermo Fisher to meet customers’ unique needs, help them scale production efforts quickly and minimize the amount of quality control required on their side.
Three new buildings will double the site’s output by expanding operational capacity in packing, shipping and more, adding 37,000 square feet and enabling Thermo Fisher to better serve global customers in biotech, pharmaceutical and diagnostics markets. As part of the expansion, Thermo Fisher will hire 20-40 personnel over the next three years.
We’re seeing increasing demand from customers around the world in industries including life sciences for the routine analysis of proteins, nucleic acids and other biological targets, all of which our chemicals are essential to. The expansion in Geel will allow us to better support our customers’ important work, including COVID-19 testing and vaccine research. Our mission of enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer matters more than ever.
- said Nicky Burbidge, senior director and general manager, fine chemical products, Thermo Fisher Scientific.
The Geel site has been fully operational during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the essential nature of their chemicals. All personnel working on-site adhere to strict COVID-19 safety protocols, including social distancing, face masks and enhanced cleaning procedures, all in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO).
We’ve been working on this concept since June 2017. We began construction in September 2019, and it’s been exciting to see it come to life. The additional space will not only allow us to better serve our customers, but also increase efficiency and ensure our colleagues have an even safer work environment.
- said Hans Van de Water, Geel site leader, Thermo Fisher Scientific
